Comparing the two, this looks more functional as the pencil gives crisper edges to the gears, whereas the coloured version looks more real.

agreed. given time and not a quick project like this was, I would have gone with something closer to the drawing actually. I rather wanted to paint it. When I studied architecture and interior design I learned to do a fully functional line drawing, then do renderings and views as needed. Pencil is still a favorite medium for me, but I work more with buildings, furniture, and other architectural type things. I am learning the rest.
